Education Assistant-Lion Country Safari

Entry level. Full-time. Weekends and holidays required.

 Duties:

Conduct educational programs, talks, and tours for groups and the general public. Assist with summer camp, office work, and special events.

Qualifications:

College degree in an applicable major. Must be 18 or older. Valid Florida driver's license required. Must pass background checks as well as pre-employment drug test. Public speaking and computer skills required. The ability to safely handle a variety of animals including mammals, reptiles, and birds. Work well without close supervision, possess a good work ethic, and have a positive outlook. Should also be a fast learner.  Bilingual a plus.

Paid internship positions available at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center

 

Position title: Bridging the Americas/Unidos por las Aves Program Intern

 

Description: Assist with a cross-cultural, conservation education program called Bridging the Americas/Unidos por las Aves which partners elementary and middle school classes in the United States (primarily in the Washington, DC area) with classes in Latin America (Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Colombia). Students in the partnered classes learn about the migratory birds that connect their communities, the need to protect the far-flung habitats these birds depend on, and about each other's country and culture. Participating teachers are provided with the tools and support needed to use long-distance migratory birds as an engaging theme for cross-curricular teaching.

Primary duties and responsibilities: Interns will have the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the management and implementation of this program, including but not limited to: crafting, evaluating, translating and/or adapting educational materials, outreach presentations, and web-based tools for teachers and students in the US and Latin America; facilitating communications between partnered classes in the US and Latin America; planning workshops and other professional development opportunities for teachers; delivering presentations to participating classes; entering and analyzing pre and post survey data to evaluate what students are learning as a result of participating; organizing outreach and fundraising events. Specific projects will be designed to match the intern's strengths, interests and goals.

Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with excellent written and oral communication skills in both Spanish and English; knowledge of birds and relevant conservation issues; familiarity with Latin American cultures; and at least three years of undergraduate coursework. Experience in formal or informal education is a big plus. Latino candidates are encouraged to apply.

Term of appointment and pay: Three to six months commitment with the potential for an extension; 20-32 hours per week; first internship term begins March 2012. Pay is $12.50 per hour.

Technician - The Wildlife Department at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center


The Wildlife Department at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center is currently seeking full time field technicians for projects involving crocodilian population ecology. Field work includes spotlight surveys and capture efforts, as well as radio tracking and nesting surveys. Additionally, technicians will perform standard and opportunistic surveys for invasive reptiles and amphibians by conducting visual encounter surveys, supplemented by auditory surveys and use of traps (box, refugia or camera) as appropriate. Applicants must be able to work independently and in sometimes harsh environments, have at least a B.A./B.S. in ecology, biology, or related field, and willing to excel in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential, and ability to operate airboats and/or motorboats is a plus. Applicant should possess strong skills in the areas of technical writing, seamanship, all-terrain vehicle operation, GIS/GPS technology, and field experience is a must. The ability to maintain field equipment and vehicles (boats, airboats, trailers, etc.) is also beneficial. Pay starts at $13 per hour. Position available immediately and open until filled. Animal Technician I - Reptiles and Amphibians - Oklahoma City Zoo

The Oklahoma City Zoo is looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our progressive and dynamic Reptile and Amphibian department. The selected candidate will work with a team to maintain a variety of reptile, amphibian, and several avian taxa and also have the opportunity to participate in the zoo's field conservation projects. Responsibilities will include daily care and feeding of animals in the collection, maintenance of habitats, behavioral observations, record keeping, animal enrichment, and training. Applicants must have a basic knowledge of reptile and amphibian biology and care, venomous handling experience, be comfortable interacting with the public, and possess excellent communication skills. A Bachelor's degree in Zoology or Biology is preferred but not required.  A desire to increase knowledge in the field by participating in scientific meetings and conferences is expected.  Must be willing to serve on the emergency response team, if requested to do so. The emergency response team responds to animal related emergencies and training including use of firearms is provided for all members. Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and work weekends and holidays as scheduled. The work week is 40 hours. The starting pay is $12.29/hr and an excellent benefit package is included. Executive Director, Conservation Trust for Florida

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will plan, execute, and support CTF’s mission to protect agricultural properties and wildlife corridors in Florida.

The Executive Director will be responsible for the management of staff and programs. The Executive Director will also work with staff to develop land conservation solutions for landowners; including conservation easements. Applicant must be skilled in fund-raising, organizational development, public relations, and administration. The Executive Director is expected to have a passion for CTF’s mission to preserve Florida’s working lands.

 

Location – Micanopy, Florida. Located between Ocala and Gainesville in north-central Florida.
