The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will host the 2012 Southeast Deer Study Group (SEDSG) meeting February 26-29, 2012 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Sandestin.  This will be the 35th annual meeting of deer biologists, managers, researchers and enthusiasts.

Hosted on a rotating basis by a different southeastern state wildlife agency’s deer management section, the conference provides deer biologists, managers and researchers a venue for presenting their most recent findings on deer biology and management. Florida previously hosted the event, the largest annual meeting of its kind across the Southeast, in Orlando in 1996.

The theme for this year's meeting is: "Shifting Paradigms: Are Predators Changing the Dynamics of Managing Deer in the Southeast?”  In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the role predators play in regards to managing deer in the Southeast.  As was demonstrated at the Texas meeting in 2010, more and more deer populations are being managed intensively.  With increasing intensity comes increased expectations and the intrinsic value of each individual deer is increased. The loss of deer to predators may depress deer populations below desired levels in some portions of the Southeast, while in other high-density areas, predator impacts may be beneficial to deer managers because they may assist in thinning out the herd in areas where deer populations need to be decreased. Learning more about the predators' role in the management of the deer in the Southeast will be critical for deer managers in the 21st Century.

We encourage you to submit abstracts for papers that examine current deer research and management programs, with particular emphasis on subjects that examine predators of deer and their role in the Southeast.  In addition to the technical presentations during the various sessions, a poster session will be offered.
