Dear FLTWS Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Dr. Larry Harris on Sunday, August 15 at the Mayo Clinic. In 1998, Dr. Harris became the first recipient of FLTWS’s “Herbert W. Kale, II Award.” He was a leader in the field of wildlife and natural resource conservation, and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of meeting and learning from him. Dr. John Hayes, Department Chair of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at UF, nicely described Dr. Harris and his contributions as follows:

“Larry was a tremendous force for conservation of natural resources in Florida, was an outspoken advocate for natural resources at the University of Florida, and was a driving force in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation. He was one of the founding voices in development of the field of landscape ecology, and his book “The Fragmented Forest” shaped the field and will remain a classic for decades to come. Larry was a friend and mentor to many of us, and kept us all on our toes with his provocative questions and continual prodding for each all to achieve more and be better than we have been. He will be sorely missed.”

Indeed, he will truly be missed. For more information about Dr. Harris’ career, please visit his Herbert Kale Award page on FLTWS’s website and the UF Wildlife Ecology and Conservation website.
